Broadcast TV Leaders Can’t Stop Talking About Forecast

From start to finish, the session room at the Harvard Club was packed, with attendees standing in the rear so they could be privy to every work spoken on the dais.

At the luncheon, sponsored by Audience, Triton Digital and Write Label, the crowd was riveted by what Emmis Communications CEO Jeff Smulyan had to say to event emcee Juliet Huddy about his forthcoming memoir, “Never Ride A Rollercoaster Upside Down.”

The luncheon also saw remarks by former NAB EVP of Radio John David, who introduced Broadcasters Foundation of America Tim McCarthy. McCarthy provided attendees with an update of the organization’s efforts across 2022.

The Executive Super Session sponsored by Skyview Networks was also jam-packed with attendees, with the lone empty seats claimed by the A-list leaders on the dais participating in a Q&A moderated by Gordon Borrell.

The Broadcast Leadership Reception sponsored by Nielsen, SBS and Super Hi-Fi saw industry illuminati ranging from Bob Pittman and Raúl Alarcon Jr. to FOX TV Stations head Jack Abernethy and Standard Media’s Deb McDermott.

Now that it’s concluded, Forecast 2023 presented by Radio Ink and Radio + Television Business Report is being lauded as the best one yet.

“The Forecast 2023 conference provided the broadcast industry with a good look into growth opportunities in 2023,” said McDermott, CEO of Standard Media and the pending new chief executive at TEGNA, should Standard General win regulatory approval of its acquisition of the broadcast television company. “The panels and discussions were thorough and offered thought-provoking discussions.”

McDermott was one of the panelists on the Executive Super Session.

For television industry executive Brian Lilly, “The Forecast conference allows me to hear from — and interact with — industry leaders. It is thought provoking, and it helps me strategically guide our company for the year ahead.”

Lilly appeared on a panel devoted to locally focused independent and small broadcast companies such as Lilly Broadcasting and sibling licensee SJL Broadcasting. Also on the panel: DuJuan McCoy, owner of Circle City Broadcasting, parent to such stations as WISH-8 in Indianapolis.

“Having and attending this annual Forecast conference is vital to broadcasters who wish to have continued success as a leader in the media world!” McCoy shared. “The open forum environment, varied opinions and different strategic outlooks from thought and industry leaders is second to none.”

For Wertlieb, the Hearst Television President, “Forecast 2023 was another affirmation of the current and future strength of local broadcasting. The combination of localism, reach and innovation by local television and radio broadcasters is an unmatched value proposition and was fully illuminated by all the attendees.  I was proud to co-chair the event with [iHeartMedia Multiplatform Group CEO] Greg Ashlock.”
